Leafhopper Control

Leafhopper Control — Biological & Organic Solutions

Leafhoppers (family Cicadellidae) are piercing-sucking insects that cause stippling, yellowing leaf edges, curled foliage, and dark frass on leaf undersides. They can also vector plant diseases, making early intervention critical. When they find a crop they favor, populations build fast across multiple overlapping generations.

Crops Affected

Grapes, apples, hops, potatoes, mint, cannabis, legumes, ornamentals, and leafy vegetables.

Biological Control Options

  • Anystis baccarum (Crazee Mite) — generalist predator; preventative rate 0.25 mites/sq. ft.
  • Orius insidiosus (Minute Pirate Bug) — targets nymphs and adults; release at 1/10 sq. ft. of canopy
  • Green Lacewing Larvae — 0.1–1.0/sq. ft. - each larva consumes 200+ pests per week

Bioinsecticide Options

Pyganic, Botanigard, Molt-X, Venerate, Arber, Grandevo, and neem oil (Trilogy) are all effective for knockdown when populations are low to moderate.

Cultural Tips

Plant sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) or ornamental pepper ‘Purple Flash’ as banker plants to attract and sustain Orius. Remove yard debris and weed patches in fall to reduce overwintering habitat.
