Corn Earworm Control

About Corn Earworm (Helicoverpa zea)

Corn Earworm is a destructive pest of corn, tomatoes, hemp, tobacco, cotton, and soybeans. Also known as the tomato fruitworm or bollworm, adult moths are light brown in color. Females lay eggs directly on fresh corn silks, and upon hatching, larvae feed their way from the silk down to the kernels. The complete lifecycle from egg to adult takes approximately 30 days, with multiple generations possible per year.

Tips for Successful Control

  • Use black light or pheromone lures and traps to monitor adult moth activity
  • Plant early in the season to avoid peak populations
  • Release Trichogramma wasps to parasitize eggs before they hatch
  • Apply beneficial nematodes (Steinernema carpocapsae and S. feltiae) to kill pupae in the soil
  • Spray with spinosad (Entrust) for organic caterpillar control
  • Hand-remove larvae when populations are low
