Fusarium Control

Fusarium Wilt is caused by various forms of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum. Symptoms include plants initially wilting and potentially making a recovery during nighttime. Lower leaves typically begin to turn yellow, and wilting becomes more severe. Occasionally just half of a leaf or certain leaflets will experience necrosis. Warm soil temps above 82ºF and acidic soils are optimum conditions for this pathogen.

Infections can enter the plant's vascular system via root injury from planting or through harmful nematode damage. The fungus will begin to rot the plant from the inside out. Peeling back bark on lower parts of the plant can reveal dark or brown vascular tissue. Stems of infected plants will show brown, rotten tissue in the center.

The key to controlling this pathogen is prevention. There is no effective fungicide or cure for fusarium wilt. Cultural practices such as cleaning pots after use, using fresh soil, sourcing plants from reliable sources and using resistant varieties can go a long way when trying to prevent this pathogen.

Products to prevent Fusarium infection include Rootshield Plus, Mycostop, Cease, Actinovate, Warhammer, Guarda, BioTam, and Regalia.  These can make a world of difference if you are dealing with this fungal disease.
